Arteries have walls that are much more elastic than veins because they transport under high pressure. The arteries cause you to feel a pulse in your wrist because of the great force of the heart pumping new blood into them. All the blood in the arteries, except for the pulmonary arteries, is oxygenated. The arteries divide up into smaller vessels called arterioles so have more muscle fibres and less elastic tissue than the larger arteries which allows them to contract and make the vessels narrower to restrict the blood flow. The arterioles divide up even more to form a branching network of vessels passing between the cells of every living tissue. The final branches are the capillaries.
