odyssey is know as a hero because of his flaws in his character, he fought in a war for up to ten years, he goes off and puts himself and his men in a dangerous situation on cyclops island. he saved him and his men by blinding the cyclops's eye. (he was unaware that the cyclops was the son of poseidon.) odysseus fought off gloriously on behalf of greeks in troy. he was named "war hero" because of the situation. i also would say odysseus is a hero because of his traits that he portrays throughout the book. he is loyal to his crew and watches out for them while he is on his voyage to get back home. odysseus is a hero also because he is loyal to the ones he loves and is compassionate in what he believes in.
