When he got to the underworld Percy Jackson discovered that the lightning bolt was the sword.   Hades said open your backpack then, Inside was Zeus’s lightning bolt. Hades said kill him.

When Percy’s friend and Percy got out Ares was standing there Ares told Percy everything.“Inside was a two-foot-long metal cylinder spiked on both ends, humming with energy ”. Hades yelled“ destroy them!” “The bolt is connected to the sword you got, kid”.This means his sword was in there but it turned into the lightning bolt and Hades thinks that Percy stole his darkness helmet and Zeus' master bolt, so he wants to defeat Percy as the thief. I mean if the master bolt was not connected to the sword then it would not be in Percy’s back.

As a conclusion,When Percy got to the underworld Percy Jackson discovered that the lightning bolt was the sword.   Hades wanted to kill him, Inside was Zeus’s lightning bolt. Hades said kill him. When Percy’s friend and Percy got out Ares was standing there Ares told Percy everything.
