HELP M Is a five-day school week really necessary? Some school districts have a four-day school week instead. To make up for the “lost” day, they have longer school days. Because this schedule is beneficial for students, more schools should follow a four-day weekly schedule.
To start with, schools can dedicate the non-instructional weekday to sports practice, activities, and events. This is important because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Physical activity can improve concentration and memory. Given these important benefits, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Institute of Medicine highlight before- and after- school programs, as well as physical activity clubs and intramural and extramural sports, as part of a comprehensive approach to increasing physical education and physical activity” (“Out of School Time”). By making sports more accessible to students and families, the four-day school week can increase students’ physical health and academic performance. Therefore, because switching to a four-day weekly schedule will benefit students in more ways than one, it is clear that schools should make the switch.
On the other hand, some believe that a four-day week would leave less time for learning. According to the Pew Research Center, “Recently released data from international math and science assessments indicate that U.S. students continue to rank around the middle of the pack, and behind many other advanced industrial nations” (“U.S. Students’ Academic Achievement”). These people feel that students cannot sacrifice learning time because American students need to be globally competitive. However, this is easily solved by lengthening the school day to make up for the addition of a non-instructional day each week.
