Mrs. Ferrars, in Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, is the mother of Edward Ferrars, Elinor's love, the heroin in the novel. Mrs. Ferrars is a rich woman, who wants his two sons to get married with women of fortune and well-bred. At the end of the novel, in trying to persuade Edward to break his engagement with Lucy, the woman he proposed to when he was younger and doesn't love anymore, she disinherit him and gives his part to his brother Robert. The latter falls in love with Lucy while Edward is away trying to make a living, and with his now gained economical liberty, he marries Lucy in secret. Edward get free from the bondage of his engament and marries Elinor.
Mrs. Ferrars' wish for her two sons falls to the ground and looses her relationship with both her sons for a while. Then she is consider the most unfortunate of women. Now she has two daughters in law with no fortune and no name. Eventualy, she restores the relationship with her two sons, but the damage is done.
