Informative Essay: A Picture of Life in the South in the Jim Crow Era
Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird during a very tense time racially in her home state of Alabama. The South was still segregated, forcing blacks to use separate facilities apart from those used by whites in almost every aspect of society. Social inequality and racial inequality was practiced across the nation by following the Jim Crow laws.
African American history during the Jim Crow era includes encounters with poverty, racism, disrespect, and protest. What was it like to be an African American during the Jim Crow era? How were African American people treated when it came to finding work, riding on a bus, or visiting a local park? How did cultural protest cause changes in the status quo?
You'll be writing an informative essay answering these questions. The goal of an informative essay, is not to present your opinion, but to inform or educate your audience on a given topic.
