Later that month, on September 16, Jane Yatman set out to ride 700 miles, a feat which she accomplished in 81 hours, 5 minutes. "Miss Yatman plainly showed the effects of the terrible strain in her countenance," reported the New York Times, "and she said that the ride was torture during the last twenty-five miles." Someone else might think that Yatman’s expression was one of determination. It is unlikely that anyone would disagree with the reporter’s opinion of the events. Most people would see Yatman’s face and decide her expression was one of pain.
