Amy Tan described several conflicts that she experienced during the dinner time. She also wished that she could be white like Robert and had a slim American nose. She hated every feature that made her Chinese, even the traditional Chinese food that her mother was cooking. She was hating that also.

Her mom who was a wise woman, recognized all of this. She made her happy by gifting her a mini skirt which was a western gift but made her understand that she could not hate her own heritage. She should feel proud of what she is and not be jealous of others. This proves a cultural conflict that Amy was going through.
