Gatsby makes mistake about telling about his wealth when he changes his statement on how he acquired his wealth to Nick.
Explanation:
"The Great Gatsby" written by an American author, F. Scott Fitzgerald was first published by Scribner's in April 1925. It is considered to be his magnum opus. While Fitzgerald was alive the novel was sold poorly but during and after World War 2, the novel was received as a "Great American novel" and widely studied in American high schools. The novel was a criticism of the society of America during the Roaring Twenties. The author has used fictional places and many of the societal developments of the era to build the plot of the novel.
Gatsby in the novel acquired his wealth through illegal means. When Nick asks him how he was able to acquire such a great wealth first he tells him that it is an inheritance from his father, but later he tells that "it took me just three years to earn the money." Nick smelling something wrong inquires that he thought he said he inherited the wealth, Gatsby tries to cover up by making up a story that he lost his inheritance in "panic of the war." When he changes his statement to how he acquired his wealth to Nick Gatsby makes mistake.
