Nestor says 'Achilles, who in the day of battle is a tower of strength to the Achaeans'. Here, Nestor shows Achilles' usefulness to the fight, and the Achaeans suffer great losses while Achilles stays in his tent and does not fight.

Agamemnon does not believe that Achilles' strength is true, or fair. In Book 1, Agamemnon says, 'Forever quarreling is dear to your heart, and wars and battles; / and if you are very strong indeed, that is a god's gift'. Agamemnon tells Achilles that his prowess is god-given, and should be used to further the Achaean cause. However, here Agamemnon also calls out the fact that Achilles has had a god's help, while others do not.
