The story of Echo and Narcissus is found in the “Stories of Gods and Heroes”
Echo was a Nymph whom the forest who was in love with Narcissus, but a goddess cursed for having lied to her, in the following quotation from the story we can read the happenings.
“Echo by her talk contrived to detain the goddess till the nymphs made their escape. When Juno discovered it, she passed sentence upon Echo in these words: “You shall forfeit the use of that tongue with which you have cheated me, except for that one purpose you are so fond of—reply. You shall still have the last word, but no power to speak first.”
The main archetype found in the story is the one of unspoken love. Before explaining why, it would be wise to explain what an archetype is. An archetype is the perfect model or example of any given thing.
Juno represents the best example or model of unspoken love because she loves Nascissus but she cannot speak, literally, she was cursed by a goddess, so even if she wished to tell her love she could not.
Many times we can confess the love we feel for someone because of fear of rejection, but Juno cannot confess her love due to a curse, so, this is the best example in the story for an archetype.
