The stories we now call "fairy tales” were not originally distinguished from the many other types of legends and stories common in Europe and America. Fairy tales only became a recognized genre with the works of
the Brothers Grimm, who published their first volume of stories, Tales of Children and the Home, in 1812.
This volume contains a number of familiar tales, including Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and
Cinderella, and is known by many people as Grimm's Fairy Tales.
