Tiny bug is creating big problems for apple growers in the United States. The bug has caused farmers to lose millions of dollars. It is called the brown marmorated stink bug. The insect gives off a foul smell when crushed. Stink bugs eat everything from apples to lima beans. They use their needle-like mouths to pierce the skin of the fruit or vegetable. Produce that has been overrun with stink bugs is safe to eat. Once it has been pierced, however, it has a spot that is marred and discolored. Most people will not buy produce that looks bad. The apples are often given away to charitable organizations. Do It!
