Further Explanation:
Tom Buchanan is a character who is an embodiment of brute strength, and his physical strength has a cruel aspect to it. He places emphasis on strength, and thus took care to ensure that he had a large build with respect to body proportions, which he built in his college years. His strength and body make him look bigger, and appear stronger than the others. However as physically endowed he may be, he did not enjoy the occasion of nourishing his knowledge capacities, thereby his mental inflexibility, and his single-handed approach to the world. He develops a particular taste for racist books, and he finds no trouble in repeating them. He is nonchalant about his troubles in marriage with Daisy, even maintaining that there was love after they had cheated on each other. Tom’s personality was thus based on the use of brute strength, and control through violence.
Tom has built his violent personality over the larger part of his life when he began to build himself at an early age. He tasted fame in his youth, after gaining popularity as a well-known football star, however, with due course of time, this faded away. Tom had tried hard to get back his lost fame, but eventually became more melancholic as fame eluded him, and it was this failure that contributed to Tom’s victim complex. His views are utterly racist as the book he reads leaves him worried that he would lose his employment at the hands of minorities, and he perceived them to be a threat to the supremacy of the white race.
