After carefully reading both of the excerpts that are presented above I believe that the words of Niemoller in “First they came for…” repeat the theme developed in “I Sit and Look Out” by Walt Whitman conveying his own view on how even the person who just remains silent while also seeing the injustice that is happening right in front of him can be the most cruel of all. He makes it clear when at the end of the poem-- “Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”
