The poet feels as if being somebody is a bad thing. they dislike the idea of it all and feel as if being somebody is too public and attention-drawing. in the poem, the narrator even states "how dreary / to be / somebody! " in this quote, the narrator specifically considers being somebody to be dreary and miserable. they most likely feel as if being "somebody" isn't very special, and later even mention that being somebody feels like being something hideous and  public.
