They faced each other, but at the end of the final round the winner left the ring. For that reason, the suitable option is the first one: "Friendship is more important than winning" since there was a champion though, he decided to go away, and it can be noticed when in the last paragraph says: "No matter what the decision, they knew they would always be champion to each other".
