The first main event would be in the very begging (in my opinion) - both Mary's parents die and she goes to live with her uncle.

The character Mrs. Craven dies in an accident, and Mr. Craven locked the garden and buried the key. The main character, Mary, becomes interested in finding the secret garden herself, and her ill manners begin to soften as a result.
