The collapse of the bank resulted from Financial Panic of 1873 which greatly affected Europe and North America. Railroad companies were forced to cut off workers pay and shorten their days of work. Workers opted to walk out of their companies and hold strikes to voice their demands which unfortunately went unheeded by their companies. The resulting strikes went violent, some were injured while others died.
