4. Explain your reaction to Washington's statement: “..., you will find that they
[blacks] will buy your surplus land, make blossom the waste places in your fields,
and run your factories. While doing this, you can be sure... that you and
families will be surrounded by the most patient, faithful, law-abiding, and
your
unresentful people that the world has seen. As we have proved our loyalty to you
in the past, in nursing your children, watching the sick-bed of your mothers and
fathers... so in the future, in our humble way, we shall stand by you.

The Texan Revolution, which lasted from October 2, 1835 to April 21, 1836, was a conflict between Mexico and Texas, which ended with the independence of Texas and the Treaty of Velasco.
Problems between the Mexican government and the U.S. settlers in Texas began with the Seven Laws of 1835, when Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna abolished the 1824 constitution and replaced it with the new anti-federalist constitution of 1835. Soon there were riots all over Mexico. The war in Texas began on October 2, 1835 with the Battle of Gonzales. The early Texas successes in La Bahia and San Antonio were followed by severe defeats in the same places a few months later. Soon after, a Texas fort was overrun and almost all defenders lost their lives in the Battle of Alamo.
The war ended with the 18-minute Battle of San Jacinto (about 30 km east of what is now Old Houston), where General Sam Houston led the Texas army to victory. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the leader of the Mexican army, was captured shortly after the battle. The war ended with the independence of the Republic of Texas. This republic was never recognized by the Mexican government. Texas became part of the United States in 1845. It was only after the Mexican-American War that the "Texas question" was solved.
