To take control of those distant lands, first European personnel had to be brought. In the summer of 1604, a group of French pioneers founded a temporary settlement on Île Ste-Croix (an islet on the river, on the current US border in Maine) and the following spring they moved to Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal) in Nova Scotia.
