The Reformation came to England when Henry VIII decided to break away from the Catholic Church when he was refused a divorce from his wife, Catherine of Aragon.
Henry VIII wanted a male heir and believed it was the fault of Catherine that he had not had one. This was common thinking of the time, that women were at fault when a male heir was not produced. Catholic monarchs had to have marriages and divorces approved by the Church. When Henry asked for a divorce from Catherine, the Church refused. Henry broke away from the Catholic Church and created the Church of England or the Anglican Church which Henry named the monarch the head.
