C. Riots between Hindus and Muslims
Explanation:
British India was partitioned into the two states of India and Pakistan in August of 1947. The culminating event was that the minority Muslims feared that their rights would be taken away once India gains independence from Britain, and that they might be repressed politically in the new independent India. After world war II, the Muslim league clamored for a separate nation of Pakistan. All these events and many others led to bloody clashes like the Calcutta bloodbath, and other clashes. By 1947, the separation was effected, causing mass migration of Muslims to Pakistan, and Hindus and Sikhs towards India. Massive riots and killing broke out between Hindus and Muslims all across India, especially in Punjab.
