La guerra fría tuvo como principal motivo la intención de tanto la Unión Soviética como de los Estados Unidos, las dos superpotencias que emergieron tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, de imponer sus ideologías a nivel mundial. Mientras Estados Unidos defendía el capitalismo y la democracia liberal, la Soviética lideraba las fuerzas armadas comunistas que defendían la democracia popular.
