by the 1840s many northern americans had come to see slavery as an evil, while many southerners defended the institution as a positive good. what arguments did each side marshal in support of its case?

The main argument used by the northerners was that slavery was an inherent evil that went against both God's will and the US Constitution. The southerners argument was mostly that blacks were unable to take care of themselves, and needed the "heavy hand" of the whites.

One major effect of industrialization on American society was more people moved to urban areas (Point  D).

American industrialization starts around the 1800s. Industrialization means changing the industry from manual labors to machine base industry - to increase productivity and maximize profit.

Industrialization occurred because of innovation, technology and transportation development. Industrialization offered new jobs resulted in urbanization. Many people moved from the farm or countryside to urban areas in search of employment or to live near the factories.  

Industrial Revolution brought significant social changes in the United States. Most of the new industrial company built near to the urban area resulted the city grew faster than ever before. Chicago was the fastest growing city. This growing city faced a new social problem, the increased inequality of wealth was most visible, the gap between the high with the lower-income become wider. The revolution also caused a rise of unskilled workers, poor working condition, low wages, and child labor.
