François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture, originally Toussaint de Bréda, born about 1743 near Cap-Français (now Cap-Haïtien), died in captivity on April 7, 1803 in La Cluse-et-Mijoux (Doubs), is a man French politics [1] of the Caribbean of Afro-Caribbean origin. descended from black slaves, he played a leading historical role as leader of the Haitian Revolution (1791-1802) and became one of the great figures of the anticolonialist, abolitionist and emancipation movements of blacks
Now we gonna talk about the rebellion
The Haitian revolution is the first successful slave revolt in the modern world. Historians traditionally place his departure at the ceremony Bois-Cayman [2], a voodoo ceremony in August 1791.it established Haiti in 1804 as the first free black republic in the world, succeeding the French colony of Santo Domingo. France had thus lost her most prosperous colony. On August 14, 1791, at Bois-Caiman, in the northern plain, many slaves decided the revolt, under the authority of Boukman, assisted by Jean-François and Biassou. this first act of the slave revolution would have taken the form of a voodoo ceremony, where in the presence of mambo Cécile Fatiman, a pact of blood is signed in the sacrifice of a black Creole pig. in a few days, all the plantations of the North are in flames, and a thousand whites massacred. Despite the repression in which Bukman is killed, gangs of armed slaves persist in the countryside and mountains. In other parts of the country, more spontaneous revolts ensue.
from the beginning of the revolution, the participants in the great slave uprising, which began in 1791 in Santo Domingo, proclaimed their loyalty to the king and to religion [3]. On the night of August 22 to 23, the slaves take up arms. The insurgents are gaining ground, but the revolution is prolonged. insurgents have valiant warriors but no experience in the exercise of power.
The slave uprising provoked heated debate in the new Legislative Assembly in Paris. The latter, at first sensitive to the arguments of the colonists, sent civil commissars to bring the free and the slaves to order. While the latter are seeking an honorable peace, the stiffness of the colonists revives revolts. the Legislative finally rallied to the arguments of the Girondins like Brissot, Elie Guadet and Armand Gensonné. These call for the equality of all free men, whatever their skin color. Their goal is to gradually bring about the abolition of slavery. April 4, 1792 is promulgated in the enthusiasm equal rights of the free and white. To enforce it, new civil commissars, including Léger-Félicité Sonthonax and Étienne Polverel, were sent to Santo Domingo, supported by four thousand National Guard volunteers.
