The Southern colonies practiced plantation agriculture and planted cash crops such as sugar and tobacco. These crops needed a lot of attention and labor and so people turned to enslaved labor so that they could get the required labor without spending too much.
African Americans were the enslaved labor which meant that they mostly worked as agricultural laborers on Southern plantations.
With enslaved labor increasing the crops being planted yet not taking too much in salaries, there was increased wealth in the South which led to a development of customer culture.
On another note, textiles made by Europeans from various materials such as fur, hides and cotton, allowed Native Americans to both trade with Europeans and acquire warmer clothing which change the way they lived.
