Colonists reacted in a variety of ways as England waged war on itself, but all were affected by these decades of turmoil. Between 1629 and 1640 the absolute rule of Charles I caused considerable friction between the English Parliament and the king. Despite the turmoil, colonial settlement grew throughout the seventeenth century, and several new settlements joined the two original colonies of Virginia and Massachusetts. Bacon's Rebellion was an armed rebellion held by Virginia settlers that took place in 1675 through 1676. Slaves were treated as property usually had few rights and always fewer than his owner, but there were not many societies in which he had absolutely none.
