The Edo Period was Japan's last Daiymo rule over the country. The Tokugawa clan still kept the status quo in Japan. Feudalism was in place and the country was isolated. The capital of Japan was Edo at the time and the society was highly traditional with little modernization. Japan would sometimes trade with the Dutch but it did not play a huge role in Japanese modernization & industrialization. Until Matthew Perry's ships arrive on Japanese shores would be the fall of the Tokugawa rule and feudalist society in Japan forever.
