The event that directly led to the first armed conflict between Arabs and Israelis was the declaration of statehood by Israel in 1948.
The Arab-Israeli War of 1948 was the first of a series of armed conflicts that pitted the State of Israel and its Arab neighbors in what is globally known as the Arab-Israeli conflict.
The United Nations agreed to partition the British Mandate of Palestine into two states: one Jewish, with 55% of the territory, and another Arab, with the remainder except Jerusalem, which would be considered an internationalized zone. This resolution was accepted by the Jewish leaders, but rejected by the Zionist paramilitary organizations and by the Arabs as a whole.
This mandate expired on May 15, 1948. Six hours earlier, on the afternoon of May 14, David Ben-Gurion had proclaimed Israel's independence in Tel Aviv, quickly recognized by the United States, the Soviet Union and many other countries. On the same day of the British withdrawal from the region, Egyptian, Iraqi, Lebanese, Syrian and Trans-Jordanian troops, supported by Libyan, Saudi and Yemeni volunteers, began the invasion of the newly proclaimed Jewish state.
