That protest was named the Salt March. Since the 19th century, Britain had kept a monopoly of the salt trade, prohibiting Indians to produce and trade with it and forcing Indians to buy it a high price from British merchants. It affected everybody, rich and poor , Hindu and Muslim alike.Though many of his collaborators did not see the sense of a protest related to the salt business, Mahatma Gandhi saw the salt trade as an example of how everyday life for Indians could be so oppresive because of British colonial interests. On March 12, 1930, Gandhi and his supporters started their march from Ahmedabad to Dandi in the Arabian Sea.
