Two staples of democracy are limited government and the right to a fair trial. Limited government is when everyone, including the government officials (and in this case, the king) has to obey the law. A fair trial is the principle that everybody deserves a chance to prove themselves innocent of a crime in court.
When King John signed the Magna Carta, he brought these principles in to England that would later become very big, significant parts of democracy. In addition to these two things, it also guaranteed many rights for the citizens of Britain to be protected against their government.
Democracy is the idea that the people rule the government, and the Magna Carta’s effect of taking some power away from the king and giving it to the people started the rise of it.
