How did the creation of a market economy affect many american farmers in the early nineteenth century?

During the creation of a market economy, many American farmers began to shift their focus on crops that they could sell for cash. Growing crops such as grains, beans or lentils became a wide popular due to the great demand and nice exchange for cash.

Gorbachevs perestroika reforms were intended to help the ailing Soviet centrally controlled economy which had failed to provide for its citizens. The reforms were an easing of strict controls on the economy to move to a more free market style economy in certain parts of the Soviet economy.
