The Palace of Versailles is considered one of the most extravagant royal estates in the world. Louis XIV created the palace and burned the receipt so nobody would know the true cost. He made it mandatory for many in the nobility to spend time at the estate with him so he may keep a close eye on them and influence them to his agenda.
