C. The decline of Mughal power allowed the East India Company to expand its trading operations across the region.
By the 18th century, the Mughal Dynasty was in decline, and a group known as the Maratha Confederacy was gaining power in the countryside. However, this group was self-interested and incapable (and unwilling) to provide stable governance.
This change in power benefitted European merchants. Previously, merchants had to adhere to the rules of the Mughal government, and they were subject to heavy oversight. With the change in power, merchants were able to profit more, and companies such as the Dutch East India and the British East India expanded greatly.
