The Cold War had a profound influence on politics and culture across the United States. Developments like the Soviet Union’s launching and successful orbit of “Sputnik,” the evolution of American involvement in Vietnam and the consequent emergence of a counterculture were all seminal developments during the Cold War era.
While the Soviet Union had been allied with the United States and Great Britain in the struggle to defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, and while American media dutifully advanced the notion of Russia as a noble ally, the two-sides to what became known as the Cold War viewed each other with distrust and, at times, outright hostility.
