a Petición de la rama de olivo es la nota escrita que el Segundo Congreso Continental de Filadelfia envió en mayo del 1775 a Inglaterra. En ella se aseguraba lealtad a Jorge III y se expresaban deseos de pronta reconciliación.
Características
La nota fue firmada por casi todos los representantes que un año después firmarían la Declaración de la Independencia. El Congreso envió esta petición cuando estaba claro que las colonias no podían declarar su lealtad al monarca y al mismo tiempo negarse a obedecerlo porque entre los representantes de las colonias la idea preponderante era que se estaba luchando contra un sector parlamentario muy conservador que se oponía a las antiguas libertades de las colonias y que todo cambiaría si se convencía al rey para que apoyase a un sector de los whigs (liberales), que afirmaban que las colonias tenían derecho a poseer sus representantes en el Parlamento inglés.
Los deseos de los colonos no se cumplieron porque el rey se negó a recibir la Petición de la rama de olivo y declaró que las colonias se encontraban en estado de rebeldía. A su vez, el Parlamento prohibió todo comercio/trato con las trece colonias.
