Frederick Douglass was a social reformer and abolitionist who lived during the 19th century. During his time as a slave in Baltimore, working for Hugh Auld, he was taught how to read by Auld's wife, Sophia. As she believed that that was the way human beings were supposed to treat one another.
However, Auld never approved this, as he believed that giving slaves education would give them tools to desire freedom. Sophia ultimately gave in to Auld's position and started restricting Douglass from reading.
This is why Douglass was in agreement with Auld. As education was, in fact, a tool for slaves to desire freedom and equality of rights.
