Why does Gandhi decide to write/speak out against British rule?
Mahatma Gandhi was already an activist for various social causes, but when the British imposed the salt tax Gandhi started his revolution. The Salt Tax was a tax imposed by Britain to destroy India’s long-established tradition of salt-making. Salt was very important to the Indian society and because of that, Gandhi led protests with the Salt March which contributed to the Indian Independence movement.

So he asks the judge to submit the highest penalty that can be inflicted upon him because it is his duty of a citizen. Also, he asks the judge to give him the highest penalty if he really believes that the law that is imposed on him is the best for the people of India.

Gandhi describes that Indian’s lives are very bad, they are semi-starved masses sinking into lifelessness. He describes that they are miserable people with little rights, they need to work for the country that exploits them because they have no money and need to survive. He also says that Britain exploits India and sucks away all profits from people. Men were being convicted with no evidence.
