A expansão romana e o escravismo se relacionam pelo fato de que após a expansão houveram mudanças significativas na organização da sociedade, já que, o processo expansionista necessitava de um aumento de exercitos, cujos soldados eram recrutados entre os camponeses livres que realizavam trabalhos agrícolas.
Portanto necessitava-se de uma maior quantidade de trabalhadores para cuidar da terra, e então os povos que habitavam os territórios conquistados pelos romanos eram escravizados e obrigados a trabalhar com agricultura, artesanato, comércio e mineração. Esse processo levou o escravismo como a principal base de sustentação social da Península Itálica.
Os escravos possuíam uma condição de vida ruim, com longas jornadas de trabalho, castigos físicos, falta de higiene e saúde. O que gerou algumas rebeliões como a mais famosa revolta escravas, a revolta de Espártaco, que reuniu 90 mil pessoas entre os anos de 73 e 71 a.c, mas que após uma traição, foram derrotados pelo exercito romano, resultado em castigos e execução.
