During the 1980s, the Republican Party and its President Ronald Reagan were very strong and consolidated. Thanks to the the different policies applied by President Reagan like, tax cuts and a big increase in spending for the nation´s defense, they became very popular with the American people.

At the same time, the polices by President Reagan about deregulation, and trying to stop the spread of communism around the world rather than just containing it, presented a tremendous appeal for the population.

Reagan was very effective during the 1980s and all these important issues like the economy, society and foreign policy were the corner stone for the popularity of the Republicans. The Reagan model as it was known, became and still remains the standard for the conservatives.
