During this time period, South Carolina was known for the harvesting of rice. The terrain of this state created ideal conditions for this crop to grow. On the other hand, states like Virginia grew tobacco because of their climate and growing season. This was then extremely different from slaves in the North. Considering the short growing season and frigid temperatures, many slaves did not work on plantations.
