D. All of the above.
Explanation:
George Wallace, a segregationist Southern Democrat who decided to run as a third-party candidate in the 1968 election, took many votes from Democratic runner Hubert Humphrey, the incumbent vice president. Republican Richard Nixon won the race.
Nixon got just 512,000 more votes than Humphrey in the total popular vote (1% of the total) , but he took most states and won more than 300 electoral votes in the Electoral College (just 270 are necessary). Nixon won 301 electoral votes, Humphrey got 191 and Wallace 46. In the key states, Nixon won by just two to three percent margins.
Nixon´s statement that he had a secret plan to end the Vietnam War and his promise to get "peace with honor" for America, found receptive ears in many sectors of the public.
Humphrey tried to disassociate himself from the LBJ policy in Vietnam, but it wasn´t successful. His being part of the government was reminded to him by people in rallies and events.
