What was the outcome of Baker v. Carr (1962)? Districts may have unequal numbers of constituents in districts. Gerrymandering based on political party is permitted and may be encouraged. Districts should have roughly equal numbers of constituents. Illegal immigrants will not experience negative repercussions for participating in the census.

Baker v. Carr was an important US Supreme court case in which the court ruled that redistricting cases is justiciable question, it allowed the federal courts to redistrict cases.
A lawsuit was filed against the state of Tennessee as it had nod done redistricting since 1901. Tennessee argued that composition legislative districts is a nonjusticiable political question.
In the majority opinion Justice William Brennan argued that redistricting is not a political question while justice Felix dissented, he argued that court's decision violated the concept of separation of powers between courts and legislatures. Although it didn't have any effect on the electoral districts it did set an important precedent about the federal court's power to address redistricting.
