In 1830, the state of Georgia passed a law that prohibited whites from living in Indian territory after March 31, 1831 without a state license. This law was written to justify the expulsion of the white missionaries who were helping the Indians resist the transfer. The missionary organizer Jeremiah Evarts urged the Cherokee Nation to take the case to the Supreme Court of the United States.
