Prairie settlers experienced extreme temperatures and harsh storms. Tough living conditions and isolation on the Prairie caused prairie madness.
EXPLANATION:
Prairie settlers were European settlers that lived in the Great Plains. Prairie settlers experienced prairie madness, which was suffering because of the difficult living conditions and severe isolation on the prairie. They had a major risk of experiencing bad situation since they moved from an urbanized area to an isolated area. Some people survived the prairie insanity, yet some moved back to the East or took the extreme way out, which was ended the life.
• Causes of prairie madness
The two causes of prairie madness were isolation and tough living condition. Isolation means that the settlers had a hard time to see their neighbors or even to get in town. There was a lack of fast and easily available transportation, so they were alone and needed a long time for a journey to visit other families and neighbors. It also took a long time for the settlers to get medical help. It took a long journey to get to the farm, so children frequently died before they could get medical care when they were sick. This contributed trauma for the parents and added up the prairie madness.
Tough living conditions also affected the prairie settlers. There were harsh weather, cold winters, powerful storms, and hot summers. When the winter came, farmers and their family could get stuck inside their house for days to avoid storm and snow.
• Symptoms
Symptoms that prairie settlers had because of prairie madness were identical to the symptoms of depression. The women in prairie would cry, dress poorly, and isolated themselves from social interactions. The men also showed symptoms of depression and often it might end up in violence. The tough living conditions in prairie triggered depression and it would be hard to overcome the symptoms without actually leaving the prairie.
