Mexico grew dissatisfied with Spanish rule and wanted independence.
Mexican priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. He was a "criollo," half Spanish, half Mexican. As the member of the clergy he was, he was against the many injustices suffered by the native Indians and did not like the way the Spanish crown oppressed the Indians. He gathered the support of many people like Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, José María Morelos y Pavón, and more, to declare the beginning of the Mexican revolutionary movement on September 15, 1810.
After gaining independence from Spain, General Agustin De Iturbide became the first emperor of Mexico. De Iturbide led the “Insurgentes Forces” to victory and proclaim Mexican Independence with the “Plan de Iguala” in 1821. Finally, on August 27, 1821, he signed the “Treaty of Cordoba” and Spain recognized the Independence of the First Mexican Empire.
