Athens was the most cultured city of ancient Greece. All of the greatest Greek philosophers and scientists come from this city. It was the cultural center of this country, especially in the 5th century BC. There were many schools and universities in the city where the Athenian citizens were able to live in a democracy because they could debate and make smart decisions. The strength of words and spirit in Athens were more important than physical or military power.

From -594, the Athenian citizens had the right to vote and participate in political decisions, except women, slaves, and foreigners. In this system, all of the citizens gathered in a large assembly to vote for the laws. There were magistrates, specialists of the constitution, and people court where 6000 citizens had the right to judge as well. It was the ancestor of modern democracy that is applied in the world nowadays.
