I'm not 100% sure, but I think the first.  'Alexander the Great and his conquering forces drove out the Persians, annexed Egypt, and established the capital city of Alexandria.'  

Alexander was a great military force in his time, quite a strategic genius actually. He did a many great things, and at times terrible, in this he took the city. And Greek influence spread throughout the culture in his doing so.
