In the American colonies, immigrants from England had a chance to claim a plot of land as their own (the best lands, however, were claimed by mercantil monopolies), instead of being forced to work the land for the local lord.
Other colonists in search of religious freedom such as the Puritans, Quakers and others were able to establish communities and even found small towns abiding by their own codes of moral conduct and free from government persecution.
Even though wealthy and noble Englishmen usually held possession and control of most of the best lands in the American colonies, they would seldom take the trip to America and become part of the everyday life in the community so a sense of equality among neighbors gradually emerged among colonists.
In summary, colonists of the American colonies coming from England and other European countries found that making a livelihood in the New World could be harder and more demanding than in their home countries, because of the harsher climate conditions and occasional altercations with the local American nations; however, they also gained a considerable deal of independence, a fair degree of freedom of speech and religious freedom, far away from the direct action of the king's government and social and economic improvement by being able to own a farm. All of these benefits would be jeopardized as taxation heavily increased in the colonies in order to make up for the expenses of the French-Indian War/Seen Years' War (1756 -1763) incurred in by the English government, which in turn would pave the way for the American Revolution and the birth of the United States.
